AH7551: Corcoran Collection in Context
Based on the permanent collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, this course surveys recent cross-disciplinary readings in art history, criticism, and visual culture studies relevant to the major periods of Western Art. Starting with a brisk chronological review of major periods and styles, the discussion will center on new approaches to the study of visual art from varied allied fields. Class time will be split between the classroom and the galleries, and students will have the opportunity to study directly works of art in their institutional context. This course is recommended for all students who want a better understanding of theoretical and critical issues in contemporary art discourse.
This course may be cross-tallied at the undergraduate level as AH4551, and at the graduate level as AH7551. Students enrolled at the graduate level will be required to complete additional assignments in order to earn graduate credit.
