AS3440: History of World Cinema

The subject of this course is the historical development of the techniques, conventions, and aesthetic principles of narrative film. Styles of national cinema are studied as responses to major social, political, and cultural changes, as well as powerful influences on how people around the world see the times they live in, using acknowledged masterworks as examples of movements and periods worldwide. Topics include: the creation of a film language; the development of cinema as a technological, capital-intensive, popular art form; German Expressionism and its cultural context; Soviet experimentalism; Hollywood as a production system and image factory; Italian Neo-Realism; the French New Wave; and emerging Third-World cinema as a response to Western cultural domination. Films are shown in DVD format in the Corcoran auditorium.
