BG1213: Drawing Orchids

This course is designed for the beginning and intermediate student interested in developing strong drawing and compositional skills through the use of line and values in capturing the unique forms of botanical subjects, with a focus on one of the most loved and varied of flowering plants, the orchid.

This course will include the careful study of light, shade and shadow; basic compositional principles, both Eastern and Western traditions; and the study of botanical anatomy and forms. Students will also explore dry and wet media and its various techniques including Sum-e (the art of Asian Brush Painting). The instructor will also discuss how to make various media from botanical sources, creating stained papers and using the media in a field sketching environment
