BG2220: Medieval Illumination and Egg Tempera on Vellum

This workshop is an historical overview of the egg tempera and 24k gold leaf technique utilized by manuscript artists from the 4th to the 14th century. In a studio setting students will study and paint from the Orchid Exhibit and also the US Botanic Gardens rich collection of flower and plant specimens to design and create their own illumination. Artists will paint on vellum the traditional support for manuscript art. The course will examine traditional egg tempera techniques demonstrated by the instructor. Students will learn the grinding of natural mineral pigments, the making and application of egg tempera paint as well as raised gold leaf as a manuscript embellishment. All egg tempera paints, vellum, gold leaf, and gilding supplies will be provided by the instructor. The study of manuscripts from the Late Antique to the Renaissance will enhance the learning experience. Please bring a lunch.

Lab Fee includes: paints, binders, gold leaf and gilding materials.
Students will be required to bring additional materials (see course materials list below).
