BG2600: Medieval Illumination
This workshop provides a historical overview of the egg tempera on panel technique utilized by manuscript and icon artists from the 10th to the 14th century. In a studio setting students will work from the Botanic Gardens rich collection of flower and plant specimens to design and create their own tempera panel.
The course will examine traditional egg tempera technique demonstrated by the instructor. Students will learn the grinding of natural mineral pigments, the making of and application of egg tempera paint as well as raised 24k gold leaf as an embellishment. The study of tempera paintings from the Late Antique to the Renaissance will enhance the learning experience.
