PT3310: Painting in a Series

This class is for intermediate and advanced students interested in producing a coherent and expressive body of work. Through visual and written exercises, students will be able to identify core themes in their work that can provide a foundation for a series of paintings, drawings, or mixed-media work. Students will receive guidance in refining drawing and painting skills, while developing focus and organizing their efforts toward a coherent artistic vision. Students come to class with a variety of life skills; beginning with a chain of small experimental pieces that require traditional and non-traditional materials, they will explore how these talents can intersect with artistic concerns to create new and meaningful work. The class will study the development of themes in the work of Tom Friedman, Howard Hodgkin, Jenny Saville, and others. Class critiques will play an important role in maintaining focus and energy and in the identification of areas of interest, leading to a sustained body of work.
