PT3332: Figure & Content
For intermediate and advance painting and drawing students. There is great interest in the expressive possibilities using figuration in post, post-modern practices in the visual arts. Through drawing and painting exercises exploring the structures of memory, and visual narrative and allegory, students will develop a personal approach to content in their painting and drawing using media of their choice, including oil, acrylic, and drawing or mixed media materials. Through instruction and regular critiques, students will refine skills in these media and learn to select materials best suited to developing their ideas and expressing content. We explore conceptual approaches using research materials from our multi-media world, and a studio model will be available if needed. We will study the dynamic figurative work being done today by artists including Marlene Dumas, Francis Alys, Inka Essenhigh, and Kehinde Wiley. Figuration's roots lie deep in western and eastern traditional imagery and students will be expected to use Washington galleries and museums to study examples of recent and historical figurative work.
