SL0820: Foam Carving and Coatings Short Course

This class explores the subtractive method of carving using polystyrene foam and carving tools such as hot wire tools, rasps and various hand and power saws. Students will experiment with a variety of materials for foam coating, which will create a firm, paint-able, permanent shell over the completed carved forms.

Priming and painting methods for finished works will be stressed in addition to the method of final presentation. In addition to gaining a level of proficiency with these techniques, students will create a small body of work that is an investigation of a singular theme of the student's choice. Through individual and group critiques, the technical, conceptual, and aesthetic concerns of the student's work will be addressed.
