THE ART OF EXHIBITION MOUNT MAKING

The art of exhibition mount making is a profession that is inextricably intertwined with conservation and exhibition design. These three fields work together toward the shared goal of safeguarding our museum collections while displaying objects in an informative and visually pleasing exhibition. Through this intensive hands-on workshop, participants will acquire a basic understanding of the unique aspects of different kinds of objects and proficiency in the fabrication of brass mounts that will allow them to safely display objects in a museum exhibition setting. Limited to 10 participants.
Students wishing to also earn graduate credit for must enroll in EX7220: Exhibition Mount Making: Research in Conservation & Art Handling in order to complete additional research and assignments.
Prerequisites: Prior experience working with basic hand tools (such as pliers, screwdriver, hacksaw, etc…) is required as well as professional experience in conservation, exhibition design or a related field.

In this blended learning course (online & in-person) students will work towards a mastery of fabrication techniques in at least one variety of museum object mount making. Students will also research the correlation of mount making with museum object conservation. Students must attend the Art of Exhibition Mount Making Workshop August 5-9. Register now!
