About Pre-College Summer Scholarships
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
SUMMER 2012
PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
I have a lot of artwork in my portfolio. Can I send more than 5 pieces?
To apply for a Pre-College Summer Scholarship, please only send 5 pieces, including one self-portrait.
How do I decide which pieces to send in?
Send the work that you feel best represents who you are as an artist.
Do I have to send a self-portrait?
Yes.
I’m applying for a scholarship for one of the Focus programs. Do I have to draw a self-portrait?
Students applying for a scholarship to attend either the Focus on Fine Art Photography or Focus on Photojournalism programs should send a self-portrait that is a photograph, rather than a drawing or painting.
ART TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS
Can my art teacher write a letter of recommendation instead of filling out the form?
No. Your art teacher must complete the recommendation form that we provided in order for your scholarship application to be considered. Your art teacher is welcome to write a letter in addition to form if they would like to. However, the recommendation is evaluated on the basis of the answers provided to the questions on the form.
SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNTS
How much is each scholarship amount?
The amount awarded depends upon which program the student indicates that they would like to enroll in. There are three levels of scholarships awarded:
Full tuition – The student is awarded an amount equivalent to the full tuition amount for a day program (or tuition, room and board for a residential program) for the specific program the student indicates on their scholarship application. The student is responsible for paying the program fee. We do hold a spot in classes for those students awarded a full tuition scholarship.
Half-tuition – This scholarship level awards the student an amount equivalent to half of the amount of the tuition for a day program (or the tuition, room and board for a residential program) for the specific program the student indicates on their scholarship application. The student is responsible for paying the program fee and the remaining half of tuition (or tuition, room and board). We do hold a spot in classes for those students awarded a half tuition scholarship.
Program fee – This scholarship level awards the student an amount equivalent to the program fee (shown as “lab fee” on our website) for the specific program the student wishes to register for. The student is responsible for paying the full amount of the tuition for a day program or the tuition, room and board for a residential program. We are NOT able to hold a spot in classes for students awarded a program fee scholarship.
“MERIT” VERSUS “MERIT AND NEED”
Will applying for a “merit” scholarship decrease my chances of receiving a scholarship?
No. Applying for a “merit” scholarship versus a “merit and need” scholarship will not impact your eligibility for a scholarship or the amount awarded.
Who should apply for a “merit and need” scholarship?
If you cannot afford to attend the program without a full tuition scholarship you should apply based on “merit and need.” Be sure to include a letter from your parents or guardians describing your family’s financial circumstances. Please keep in mind that you will still be responsible for paying the program fee (shown as “lab fee” on our website) and that you and your family will need to budget accordingly.
Do you off any scholarships on the basis of need only?
No. Unfortunately our scholarship funds are limited. As a result we are only able to award scholarships to students in need who also demonstrate artistic merit.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND REGISTERING
I know that the Pre-College Summer Programs fill up quickly. Will a spot still be available for me after the scholarships are awarded?
We hold a spot in classes for students who are awarded either a full or half-tuition scholarship only. Unfortunately we are not able to hold a spot for students who are awarded a program fee scholarship. Students who plan and can afford to enroll in the program even if they do not receive a scholarship or if they receive a partial scholarship are encouraged to register as early as possible to ensure a seat in the summer program.
I am applying for a merit scholarship, and plan to attend the program even if I do not receive a scholarship. Should I register now?
Yes. If you plan to attend even if you do not receive a scholarship we recommend that you register as soon as possible. Registering early will not impact your eligibility for a scholarship.
I cannot afford to attend the program if I do not receive a scholarship. Should I register now?
No. If you cannot afford to pay for the program without a scholarship, please wait until you’ve been notified about the status of your scholarship application before registering. Please keep in mind that you will still be responsible for paying the program fee (shown as “lab fee” on our website) and that you and your family will need to budget accordingly.
